22nd Annual Hunters Breakfast

You don’t have to be a hunter to enjoy a hearty breakfast at our 22nd Annual Hunters Breakfast Saturday, October 17th, from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.! Invite your friends and family to come out to the Grange for a delicious ham/egg/hotcake breakfast for $7.00/adults, half price for those 12 and under. And to top it off, homemade apple butter to enjoy with your pancakes or in jars to buy to take home or give as gifts.

For the hunters out there, we’ll be raffling off a $100 Gift Certificate from Three Forks, an old fashioned ammo and reloading shop located on the east end of Cle Elum. We’ll also be selling raffle tickets for Raggedy Ann & Andy Dolls handmade by Bonnie Marsh of Ellensburg and dressed for deer season. Many thanks for these great raffle items! Questions? Call Claire at 509-857-2580

Christmas in November . . .

The annual Grange Christmas Bazaar is scheduled for Saturday, November 14, from 9 AM to 2:30 PM. Days before, Grange bakers will be busy making all sorts of goodies for our Bake Sale table. This is a very popular event and custom-ers return year after year for our homemade treats. We’ll also be serving a tasty lunch to the many shoppers who come to see the handmade items offered by local vendors.
If you’re looking for something special you won’t find in a store, come by for items ranging from homemade soaps to warm fleece vests – you won’t be disappointed. And stay for a hot lunch and free coffee, and of course a cookie or two! The Auxiliary will provide a gift basket to raffle and Bonnie Marsh of Ellensburg has made an adorable pair of Raggedy Ann & Andy dolls that will be raffled off as well – thank you, Bonnie!

President’s Paragraph, by Gerald Carollo

Just about 2 months ago, on August 1, the Centennial Center in Cle Elum tragically caught fire and burned to the ground. Bill Reagan, one of the volunteers grilling steaks for the approximately 140 people at the Center that evening, was air-lifted to Harborview with serious burns. Miraculously, there were no other serious injuries. Just 57 days following that fire, 100 volunteers raised the walls for the new Centennial Center! Bill Reagan, still recuperating, attended the event. This month trusses will be delivered and soon after the building will be closed in for the winter.

All of this shows the strength and determination of the folks involved with this project and how this community pulls together in times of crisis. It brought back memories of when our Grange Hall burned back in 2004. And of how people came forward to help. At our last meeting, we voted to donate proceeds from our 2010 I90 Rest Stop weekend to the Centennial Center, to help with their rebuilding effort. We’ll need your help to cover the shifts, to bake cookies or donate coffee. Watch for more information in the upcoming newsletter and join in our effort to help our neighbors in need.

If you look at our schedule, you’ll see that activities are picking up at the Grange. The Hunters Breakfast, square dancing, a Bavarian Fest, pumpkin pie baking, the Christmas Bazaar – it’s a busy time. If you’re asked to help with an event, I hope you’ll say “yes” and discover how much fun it can be. Come on out to a dance or offer to bake a pie for a family in need. There are plenty of opportunities to give of yourself and your talents!
On a personal note, Donna’s father, Philip McBeth, passed away Monday, September 21st. We appreciate the kind notes and phone calls from members and friends – thank you for your support. Your friendship and caring means a lot to both of us.

Women’s Activities, by Judy Doolittle

Judy Doolittle (at left) has graciously agreed to serve out Shirley Garrett’s term as CWA for our Grange. Thank you, Judy! And we want to thank Shirley for her years of faithful service as Chair of Women’s Activities. Whether it was manning the kitchen at the Eagles for our Prime Rib Dinner & Auction or a pre-dawn arrival at the Grange to get ready for the Hunters Breakfast, you knew things would go smoothly with Shirley in charge. So, while this will give Shirley some time off from all those responsibilities, I’m glad to see that she has signed up for kitchen duty at the Hunters Breakfast again this year!
The October 2nd Auxiliary meeting was held at Judy’s home on the west side of Cle Elum. Items on the agenda were the upcoming Hunters Breakfast on October 17th, the Christmas Bazaar on November 14 (we need baked goods and we’ll be putting together a basket to raffle off) , the Bavarian Fest being planned by the Dance Committee for November 21st, setting up a schedule for grange mem-bers to help with cleaning of the grange (we need someone for December, April and May), making pumpkin pies for the Upper County Thanksgiving Basket program, and so on. It’s an ambitious schedule, but it can be done with your help.
The November 6th meeting will be at the home of Barb Hamel – 3440 Teanaway Road, Middle Fork, Cle Elum. Barb will be sending out a message with more information as the date approaches. If you have questions, feel free to call her at 509-674-2982. And if you can help with cleaning duties at the grange, Barb is the gal to call!

Thanksgiving Pie Project

pumpkinpieLast Thanksgiving 80 food baskets were given out to Upper County residents through the Food Bank located at the CMA Church in South Cle Elum. And each of those baskets con-tained a pumpkin pie donated by our Grange members!

It is estimated that at least 85 families in need will sign up this year for a food basket so their family will have a good meal Thanksgiving Day. We need to deliver them to the Food Bank by November 20th. Will you join fellow Grange members in providing a pumpkin pie (baked, wrapped and frozen) for each of these baskets?

Membership News, by Claire Lucke

Travis Matthews (at left with Barb Sowers), the 2009 Ellensburg High School graduate who was chosen to receive our $1,000 Scholarship Award, became a member of our Grange in July. Travis, whose family live in Thorp and who have a long history of Grange members, is currently pursuing a John Deere Technology Degree at Walla Walla Community College. We are proud to count Travis as a member of our Grange and wish him well in his studies!

We also welcomed Scott and Carolyn Lehman and their daughter Miranda (14) and son Josh (9) as family members this July. The Lehman’s live on Woods-Steele Road, just off
Westside Road, Cle Elum. Carolyn is a pharmacy assistant at Cle Elum Drugs. In addition to her work at the pharmacy, Carolyn has experience training horses and teaching people to ride, customer service and office management, and enjoys crafts, baking, cooking, and outdoor activities. Husband Scott is superintendent/foreman for a construction company on the west side of the mountains and enjoys snowmobiling, fishing and hunting. Carolyn and Miranda will join our group of kitchen workers at the Hunters Breakfast – be sure to give them a big welcome.

Easton resident L.W. (Johnny) Cunningham became a member in August. Johnny’s an active volunteer for several organizations in Upper County. Every Wednesday he can be found delivering lunches purchased from the Senior Center to businesses around town. I’ve been told it’s 30 – 40 lunches – that’s dedication!

These and all our members are crucial to the life and vitality of the Swauk Teanaway Grange. We are a member
driven organization that prides itself on our grassroots heritage. There are Granges from coast to coast and north to south, across this country. I am not talking about Grange Halls – I am talking about Granges made up of PEOPLE!

Members are important. We each bring something different to the organization and each of us has something to contribute. We have members of all ages, new members and those with over 50 years of membership. We all have different abilities, different personalities. But no matter our age or length of membership or skills or temperament, we each have something to contribute, and any one of us can make a difference in our community and in our Grange. Do you see a need in our community where the Grange could make a difference? If our Grange is to be relevant to our community, we need to ask this question – and then work to make a difference.

Dance Socials, by Gerry Lloyd

Fall signals a return to our monthly potluck socials. Following a potluck supper at on Saturday, October 24th, the Blue Agate Square and Round Dance Club join us for an introduction to the American tradition of square dancing. Did you know that the square dance is the official dance of Washington State? Square dancing has been an American tradition since our earliest history when settlers danced squares, contras and reels around campfires on their way out west.
Our grange hall has been the home of the Blue Agates, Kittitas County’s own square dance club, since January. A number of our members have taken lessons and know first hand what a friendly group of folks these are and what a great form of exercise square dancing can be. Quite a few square dancers have become Grangers! If you would like more information about lessons, which are scheduled to start October 27th, make plans to come to the October 24th dance and/or call club President Dale Rusho at 509-674-5275 for more information.

You won’t need to drive to Leavenworth on November 21st to enjoy a hearty Bavarian meal of grilled brats, sauerkraut and German potato salad! Bavaria is coming to Ballard Hill Road – complete with traditional German music, brought to us by the band Musikkapelle Leavenworth, pictured at left. No, this isn’t a potluck! You don’t have to bring a thing – we’ll do the cooking. Tickets are $10 and are available by calling Barb Hamel at 509-674-2982 or Barb Sowers at 509-674-2528. Doors open at 5:30 PM, dinner at 6:00 PM. Come and savor these traditional dishes and music that will make you think you’re in the old country!
